What to do with Washington plates after moving to Nebraska
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Washington instruction only after the Nebraska registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Obtain a Nebraska title and registration through the county motor-vehicle office within 30 days after arriving. Nebraska issues the state title before the registration.
Present original or electronic proof of current financial responsibility to the County Treasurer when applying for registration and carry proof in the vehicle.
Invalidate or return old Washington plates
After the destination registration is active, remove or invalidate the Washington month and year tabs and bend regular plates so they cannot be mistaken for valid plates. Recycle them where accepted or mail or take them to a vehicle licensing office. Washington requires listed personalized, disabled, collector, and other special plates to be returned rather than recycled.
