Keep or sell decision

Sell a car before moving out of Minnesota

A sale can remove destination transport and registration costs, but it also creates a title, plate, registration, insurance, and possible tax closeout in Minnesota.

Check the narrow Minnesota refund exceptions before filing

After the destination registration is active, do not count on a refund simply because the vehicle moved. Minnesota's current statute provides unused registration-tax refunds for listed cases such as a vehicle permanently destroyed or sold to a government entity, along with corrections of payment errors. If none applies, keep the new registration and skip an unsupported refund claim.
