  1. 01File the free notification

    Use the TxDMV online Vehicle Transfer Notification or VTR-346, not both. Texas Transportation Code section 501.147 provides the strongest seller protection when TxDMV receives a complete notice within 30 days after delivery. Submit a late notice anyway, but TxDMV says a late filing does not guarantee release from liability.

  2. 02Use only known buyer facts

    Enter the buyer's full name, address, and phone number actually obtained in the sale. Do not invent, guess, or substitute information to make the form complete. Missing required buyer information may prevent TxDMV from marking the record, so preserve the sale evidence and ask the agency which contact path remains available.

  3. 03Save confirmation and history evidence

    Keep the online confirmation or submitted VTR-346 with the signed title and bill of sale copies. If toll or parking notices continue, ask TxDMV for the confirmation email described in its seller guidance. When the state record itself is needed, VTR-275 offers a certified title history or certified title-and-registration verification, subject to its access rules and fee.

  4. 04Keep the notice's limits clear

    The notification places the reported transfer on the vehicle record. It does not transfer title, remove the seller from the title record, or force the buyer to apply. Respond separately to later notices using the sale and notification proof, and obtain legal advice when ownership, liability, or enforcement is disputed.

  • Online Vehicle Transfer Notification confirmation or a complete copy of VTR-346
  • The buyer's full name, address, and phone number actually provided at the sale
  • Sale date, vehicle identification number, plate number, and odometer reading
  • Copies of the signed title and bill of sale, if retained
  • Later toll, parking, registration, impound, or enforcement notices and each response
  • A certified title history requested on VTR-275 when evidence of the recorded history is needed
