Wake County Vehicle Tax Refund After Moving
Surrender your North Carolina plate, register in the new state, and send Wake County the FS-20 and new registration within one year to ask for a vehicle-tax proration or refund.
Keep each submission and final status separate
- 01Surrender the plate on time
Wake County requires the North Carolina plate to be surrendered to NCDMV, or reported lost or stolen, before the month it expires. Keep the NCDMV FS-20 plate surrender form. A plate surrendered during or after the expiration month does not meet that condition as the county page states it, so ask the county before expecting a refund.
- 02Transfer or register the vehicle
The vehicle must be transferred to a new owner or registered in your new state of residence. For an interstate move, keep a copy of the new-state registration. A move to another North Carolina county is different: once the combined registration and property tax notice is paid, the county says no adjustment is due, and the next combined notice will show the new county.
- 03Send the documents within one year
Within one year of surrendering the plate, send the FS-20 and either a bill of sale or a copy of the new-state registration. The county accepts email to taxhelp@wake.gov, the web form at wake.gov/vehiclehelp, or mail to Wake County Tax Administration, P.O. Box 2331, Raleigh, NC 27602-2331. Include the mailing address to use for a refund check.
- 04Know what is not refunded
Any municipal vehicle tax assessed under North Carolina General Statute 20-97 is not subject to proration or refund. The county page does not say how long processing takes or how a proration is calculated, so keep your submission record and ask Wake County Tax Administration for the status.
