Switch car insurance from Alaska to North Dakota
Activate coverage North Dakota will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Alaskapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Alaska registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate North Dakota coverage
Maintain North Dakota's required motor-vehicle liability coverage before operating the vehicle and keep proof available through the transition.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Submit the North Dakota title and registration application with the out-of-state ownership document and proof of legal name. The current motor-vehicle guidance does not publish one general new-resident day-count deadline.
- 04Close Alaska
After the destination registration is active, check whether the paid Alaska registration period has begun. Alaska does not issue partial-period refunds, but a registration paid before its effective period may be refundable with proof of the new out-of-state registration. If eligible, complete Form 853 and submit it through Alaska DMV Online Services; otherwise retain the new registration and avoid an ineligible claim.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
