Switch car insurance from California to Delaware

Activate coverage Delaware will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Californiapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep California registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Delaware coverage

    Arrange liability coverage accepted by Delaware before the transaction. DMV requires current proof and does not accept a photo or ordinary printout of an insurance card.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Title and register the vehicle within 60 days after becoming a Delaware resident.

  4. 04
    Close California

    After the replacement registration is active, report the address change to California DMV within 10 days. If California sends a renewal notice, return it with the date the vehicle left and the state where it is now registered so the vehicle record is updated.

  5. 05
    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
