Switch car insurance from Colorado to California

Activate coverage California will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Coloradopolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep Colorado registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate California coverage

    California financial responsibility is required for vehicles operated or parked on California roads.

    Complete the destination registration

    California requires an out-of-state vehicle to be registered within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into the state.

  4. 04
    Close Colorado

    After the destination registration is active and the Colorado plates are off the vehicle, return regular plates to a Colorado county motor vehicle office or use a recycler that accepts metal license plates. Ask the county before disposing of personalized or qualifying specialty plates, and retain the replacement registration proof.

    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
