Switch car insurance from Colorado to Maine

Activate coverage Maine will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Coloradopolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep Colorado registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate Maine coverage

    Bring proof of Maine motor-vehicle insurance to the registration transaction and keep prior-state coverage active until the old registration is safely closed.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Convert the vehicle title and registration within 30 days after establishing Maine residency. Pay the municipal excise tax before completing the registration through the municipality or BMV.

    Close Colorado

    After the destination registration is active and the Colorado plates are off the vehicle, return regular plates to a Colorado county motor vehicle office or use a recycler that accepts metal license plates. Ask the county before disposing of personalized or qualifying specialty plates, and retain the replacement registration proof.

    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
