Switch car insurance from Florida to New Mexico
Activate coverage New Mexico will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Floridapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Florida registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate New Mexico coverage
Bring a current insurance card, policy copy, or insurer letter showing the required liability coverage.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.
- 04Close Florida
Florida says an unexpired plate must be surrendered when insurance is no longer maintained. Keep the receipt because an active uninsured plate can trigger driver-license sanctions.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
