Switch car insurance from Georgia to Minnesota
Activate coverage Minnesota will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Georgiapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Georgia registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Minnesota coverage
Bring the insurer name, policy number, and policy expiration date for the registration transaction.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Register a passenger vehicle, motorcycle, utility trailer, or house trailer within 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident. Registration is due immediately if the prior registration has expired.
- 04Close Georgia
After the destination registration is active, cancel the Georgia registration through DRIVES e-Services or the county tag office and save the confirmation. Georgia requires continuous liability coverage while its registration remains active.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
