Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Hawaii to Connecticut

Activate coverage Connecticut will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Hawaiipolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Hawaii registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Connecticut coverage

Bring proof of insurance that meets Connecticut's minimum requirements for the registration transaction.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Transfer the out-of-state registration within 90 days. Connecticut allows a combined appointment when the license and vehicle transactions are both ready.

  4. 04
    Close Hawaii

After the destination registration is active, write to the Hawaii county finance office that holds the old vehicle record within 30 days of the address change. Include the old and new addresses and keep a copy with the new registration. Ask that county whether it needs any additional step for the old plate or record.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
