Switch car insurance from Idaho to Alabama

Activate coverage Alabama will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Idahopolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep Idaho registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate Alabama coverage

    Put Alabama liability insurance in place before applying for the registration.

    Complete the destination registration

    Register the vehicle within 30 days after it enters Alabama. Vehicles covered by Alabama's title law must be titled before registration.

    Close Idaho

    After the destination registration is active, submit Idaho's ITD 3438 License Plate Cancellation Request with the moved-out-of-state reason and choose whether to cancel the plate, registration, or both. Keep the submitted form and delivery confirmation before ending the policy that supported the Idaho record.

    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
