Switch car insurance from Illinois to Montana
Activate coverage Montana will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Illinoispolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Illinois registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Montana coverage
Carry proof of Montana-compliant insurance while driving. Montana MVD says proof is not required to complete the registration transaction, but coverage remains required for operation.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Title and register the vehicle through the county treasurer within 60 days after establishing Montana residency.
- 04Close Illinois
After the destination registration is active, submit VSD 851, Vehicle License Plates Revocation Request, using the registered-owner-moved-out-of-state reason. Keep a copy and delivery proof before treating the old insurance record as closed.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
