Switch car insurance from Iowa to North Carolina
Activate coverage North Carolina will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Iowapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Iowa registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate North Carolina coverage
Bring proof of coverage from a North Carolina-licensed insurer; out-of-state policies are not accepted for registration.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Title and register within 60 days, subject to the earlier employment or reciprocity trigger described by NCDMV.
- 04Close Iowa
After the destination registration is active, return the Iowa plates with evidence that the vehicle is registered in the new jurisdiction. If the unused Iowa registration fee is at least $10, sign Claim for Refund Form 411047 and submit it to any Iowa county treasurer within six months after moving out of state. Keep the plate-return receipt, new registration copy, and refund submission record together.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
