Switch car insurance from Louisiana to Maine

Activate coverage Maine will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Louisianapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep Louisiana registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Maine coverage

    Bring proof of Maine motor-vehicle insurance to the registration transaction and keep prior-state coverage active until the old registration is safely closed.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Convert the vehicle title and registration within 30 days after establishing Maine residency. Pay the municipal excise tax before completing the registration through the municipality or BMV.

  4. 04
    Close Louisiana

    After the destination registration is active, cancel the Louisiana plate online, at an OMV office, or by mail before canceling liability insurance. If canceled online, remove and destroy the plate after saving confirmation.

  5. 05
    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
