Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Louisiana to North Dakota

Activate coverage North Dakota will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Louisianapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Louisiana registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate North Dakota coverage

Maintain North Dakota's required motor-vehicle liability coverage before operating the vehicle and keep proof available through the transition.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Submit the North Dakota title and registration application with the out-of-state ownership document and proof of legal name. The current motor-vehicle guidance does not publish one general new-resident day-count deadline.

  4. 04
    Close Louisiana

After the destination registration is active, cancel the Louisiana plate online, at an OMV office, or by mail before canceling liability insurance. If canceled online, remove and destroy the plate after saving confirmation.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
