Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Maine to Maryland

Activate coverage Maryland will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Mainepolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Maine registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Maryland coverage

Have Maryland insurance information ready for the title and registration application, including the company and policy or binder number.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Title and register the vehicle within the same 60-day period. MVA offers a combined new-resident appointment for the license, title, and registration.

  4. 04
    Close Maine

After the replacement registration is active, submit Maine's MVR-60 Plate Cancellation Request to BMV and keep the staff-signed copy, which serves as the plate cancellation order. Keep the destination registration with that proof before ending the old policy.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
