Switch car insurance from Massachusetts to District of Columbia
Activate coverage District of Columbia will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Massachusettspolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Massachusetts registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate District of Columbia coverage
Put valid DC vehicle insurance in place for registration and keep it continuous while the DC tags remain active.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Register the vehicle within 60 calendar days after beginning to live in DC. A DC driver license or non-driver ID must be issued first.
- 04Close Massachusetts
After the new registration is active, cancel the Massachusetts registration, download the cancellation receipt, and provide it to the insurer before ending the Massachusetts policy. The plates do not go back to RMV; recycle or destroy them after cancellation.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
