Switch car insurance from Michigan to Washington
Activate coverage Washington will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Michiganpolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Michigan registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Washington coverage
Maintain continuous coverage accepted for the Washington-registered vehicle.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Register the vehicle within the same 30-day period at a separate vehicle licensing office.
- 04Close Michigan
After the vehicle is titled and registered in the destination state, Michigan does not require the old plate to be returned. Destroy it before disposal to prevent misuse, keep the new registration proof, and ignore a later Michigan renewal notice only after the replacement registration is complete.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
