Switch car insurance from Minnesota to Illinois
Activate coverage Illinois will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Minnesotapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Minnesota registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Illinois coverage
Keep liability coverage active through the transition and carry proof for the Illinois-registered vehicle.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Apply for Illinois title and registration within 30 days after establishing residence, provided the vehicle remains properly registered in the former jurisdiction.
- 04Close Minnesota
After the destination registration is active, do not count on a refund simply because the vehicle moved. Minnesota's current statute provides unused registration-tax refunds for listed cases such as a vehicle permanently destroyed or sold to a government entity, along with corrections of payment errors. If none applies, keep the new registration and skip an unsupported refund claim.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
