Switch car insurance from Missouri to Maryland
Activate coverage Maryland will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Missouripolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Missouri registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Maryland coverage
Have Maryland insurance information ready for the title and registration application, including the company and policy or binder number.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Title and register the vehicle within the same 60-day period. MVA offers a combined new-resident appointment for the license, title, and registration.
- 04Close Missouri
After the destination registration is active, remove the Missouri plates. Missouri says unused or expired plates may be destroyed and recycled where you are, returned to a Missouri license office, or mailed to the Department of Revenue's License Plate Surrender unit. Make an unexpired plate unusable and retain the new registration proof before disposal.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
