Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Montana to Nevada

Activate coverage Nevada will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Montanapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Montana registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Nevada coverage

Obtain Nevada evidence of insurance before registration; Nevada DMV does not accept an out-of-state policy for this transaction.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Register the vehicle within 30 days after establishing residency. Nevada's major offices can process a noncommercial license and registration during the same visit.

  4. 04
    Close Montana

After the destination registration is active, complete Montana MV60 and select permanent cancellation. Every listed owner must consent, and the plates must be removed when they remain in the owner's possession. Keep the signed form and submission proof with the destination registration before treating the old record as closed.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
