Switch car insurance from New Jersey to California

Activate coverage California will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the New Jerseypolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep New Jersey registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate California coverage

    California financial responsibility is required for vehicles operated or parked on California roads.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    California requires an out-of-state vehicle to be registered within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into the state.

  4. 04
    Close New Jersey

    Return the plates to MVC in person or by mail and keep the surrender receipt. MVC says plates must be returned when vehicle insurance is terminated.

  5. 05
    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
