Switch car insurance from New Jersey to Pennsylvania

Activate coverage Pennsylvania will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the New Jerseypolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep New Jersey registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate Pennsylvania coverage

    Bring proof of Pennsylvania insurance with effective and expiration dates.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Apply for Pennsylvania title and registration within 20 days of establishing residency.

  4. 04
    Close New Jersey

    Return the plates to MVC in person or by mail and keep the surrender receipt. MVC says plates must be returned when vehicle insurance is terminated.

  5. 05
    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
