Switch car insurance from New Mexico to District of Columbia

Activate coverage District of Columbia will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the New Mexicopolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep New Mexico registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate District of Columbia coverage

    Put valid DC vehicle insurance in place for registration and keep it continuous while the DC tags remain active.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Register the vehicle within 60 calendar days after beginning to live in DC. A DC driver license or non-driver ID must be issued first.

    Close New Mexico

    If the New Mexico registration still remains active after the move, do not rely on an out-of-state policy appearing automatically in its insurance database. Submit signed Form MVD-11268 with proof of the out-of-state insurance and residency, and repeat it at each policy renewal for as long as the vehicle remains registered in New Mexico. Keep the affidavit packet and delivery proof with the destination registration.

  5. 05
    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
