Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Ohio to Massachusetts

Activate coverage Massachusetts will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Ohiopolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Ohio registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Massachusetts coverage

Obtain Massachusetts insurance before the vehicle transaction. A licensed Massachusetts insurance agent must stamp and sign the Registration and Title Application.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Massachusetts says to transfer the vehicle registration and title as soon as you become a resident; state law provides no registration grace period.

  4. 04
    Close Ohio

After the destination registration is active, use Ohio BMV's Vehicle Registration Cancellation service and save the confirmation or status result. Ohio limits the request to an owner, co-owner, or authorized representative and warns that cancellation cannot be reinstated and does not produce a registration refund.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
