Switch car insurance from Pennsylvania to Alabama

Activate coverage Alabama will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Pennsylvaniapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

    Keep the old record supported

    Keep Pennsylvania registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

    Activate Alabama coverage

    Put Alabama liability insurance in place before applying for the registration.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

    Register the vehicle within 30 days after it enters Alabama. Vehicles covered by Alabama's title law must be titled before registration.

  4. 04
    Close Pennsylvania

    After the destination registration is active, send the Pennsylvania plate and registration card to PennDOT's Return Tag Unit and retain delivery proof. Pennsylvania requires insurance on a currently registered vehicle and can suspend the registration after an uncovered lapse.

    End or rewrite the old policy

    Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
