Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Pennsylvania to Minnesota

Activate coverage Minnesota will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Pennsylvaniapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Pennsylvania registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Minnesota coverage

Bring the insurer name, policy number, and policy expiration date for the registration transaction.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Register a passenger vehicle, motorcycle, utility trailer, or house trailer within 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident. Registration is due immediately if the prior registration has expired.

  4. 04
    Close Pennsylvania

After the destination registration is active, send the Pennsylvania plate and registration card to PennDOT's Return Tag Unit and retain delivery proof. Pennsylvania requires insurance on a currently registered vehicle and can suspend the registration after an uncovered lapse.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
