Two policies, one safe handoff

Switch car insurance from Washington to Michigan

Activate coverage Michigan will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Washingtonpolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.

  1. 01
    Keep the old record supported

Keep Washington registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.

  2. 02
    Activate Michigan coverage

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

  3. 03
    Complete the destination registration

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

  4. 04
    Close Washington

After the destination registration is active, remove or invalidate the Washington month and year tabs and bend regular plates so they cannot be mistaken for valid plates. Recycle them where accepted or mail or take them to a vehicle licensing office. Washington requires listed personalized, disabled, collector, and other special plates to be returned rather than recycled.

  5. 05
End or rewrite the old policy

Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.

After the auto comparison

Check the policy for the new home

Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

What this comparison does and does not do

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.

The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.

You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
