Switch car insurance from West Virginia to Nebraska
Activate coverage Nebraska will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the West Virginiapolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep West Virginia registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate Nebraska coverage
Present original or electronic proof of current financial responsibility to the County Treasurer when applying for registration and carry proof in the vehicle.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Obtain a Nebraska title and registration through the county motor-vehicle office within 30 days after arriving. Nebraska issues the state title before the registration.
- 04Close West Virginia
After the destination registration is active, return the West Virginia plate to DMV and retain delivery, drop-box, or counter proof before canceling the West Virginia policy. If the plate cannot be surrendered because it is lost or stolen, use Form WV-4S and keep the accepted record.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
