New York MV-843 for a vehicle owned by someone who died
MV-843 is a checklist for the title, authority, tax, insurance, application, and fee records used in a deceased-owner transfer. The correct path depends on the estate and the person authorized to transfer the vehicle.
Use MV-843 only when the transaction fits
The transaction facts determine the form, not the other way around.
- The vehicle is titled in the name of a person who died
- A surviving spouse, estate representative, or other recipient needs to transfer or register the vehicle
- The applicant needs to confirm the ownership, death, tax, insurance, and fee documents in one place
- The transaction will be submitted at a DMV office or through the Title Bureau path described by DMV
Connect the form to the ownership record
- 01Identify the person with authority
Determine whether the signer is a surviving spouse, executor, administrator, or another person using a specific DMV affidavit. Do not sign for the deceased owner.
- 02Follow the matching checklist column
MV-843 separates the documents by recipient and transaction type. Use the column that matches the actual estate path rather than collecting every form on the page.
- 03Match the tax and insurance records
Use DTF-802 when tax is due or the vehicle is a gift, or DTF-803 only for an exemption listed on that form. Insurance must use the exact name of the person registering the vehicle.
- 04Keep the authority with the title chain
Submit the original ownership record and the required proof of death or authority. Keep copies of the completed packet and the DMV receipt.
What this form does not do
- It does not appoint an executor or administrator
- It does not decide who inherits the vehicle
- It does not replace the title, death certificate, court authority, or required affidavit
- It does not make a New York simplified estate form valid for an out-of-state title
Have us check where the form belongs in your transaction
