Start with GM Financial's process

The destination state controls registration and still decides what document it can use and where it must go. The lender handles the title it holds, and the two paths need to meet before the state can finish the transfer.

  1. 01Start here

    Make sure your monthly payments are up to date, because GM Financial says it cannot complete a new registration if you are past due. Then contact the destination registration office, which will advise you whether the process goes through GM Financial or directly through the office.

  2. 02Use the approved channel

    If the registration office tells you to work with GM Financial, complete GM's Relocation Request Form and mail it to GM Financial, ATTN: Out-of-State Registration Department, P.O. Box 1510, Cockeysville, MD 21030. GM Financial uses a third party that may contact you if anything is missing from your request. If the office handles the process directly, GM says no further steps are needed between you and GM Financial. To reach GM Financial, message it in MyAccount or the GM Financial Mobile app, or call 1-800-284-2271. Its FAQ says Arizona, New York, and West Virginia require the lienholder's permission to re-register. If you need that permission, contact GM Financial for approval.

  3. 03Plan for the handoff

    GM Financial says to allow up to 10 business days for the title to be sent to your registration office, so confirm the destination deadline separately. GM also says that changing your state registration near the end of your agreement may cause delays when releasing your title.
