Move a Motorcycle to Maryland
Move an out-of-state motorcycle through Maryland title, registration, safety inspection, insurance, and Class M endorsement transfer.
Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Title and register the motorcycle within 60 days after moving to Maryland. Transfer the noncommercial driver license within the same 60-day window, and do not let the inspection appointment crowd out the title deadline.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Bring the out-of-state title, prior registration, Maryland address evidence, Maryland insurance company and policy or binder information, and lienholder account, fax, and mailing details when a lender holds the title. Complete the MVA pre-application before the appointment when possible.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Obtain a Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate from a station authorized for motorcycles before title and registration. A returning owner whose motorcycle was previously titled in Maryland in the same name can use the MVA's stated inspection exception.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Complete the Maryland title and motorcycle registration in the new-resident transaction. Missing the 60-day window can eliminate the available credit for qualifying tax previously paid to another state and can expose the out-of-state registration to citation.
Check the exact vehicle class
A valid out-of-state motorcycle license or endorsement transfers after the vision requirement without knowledge or skills tests unless it has been expired for at least one year. Without a transferable endorsement, use Maryland's Class M permit, testing, or approved Maryland safety-course path; Maryland generally does not accept another state's course certificate by itself.
