Move a Trailer to Maryland

Resolve the trailer's title and registration class within the 60-day new-resident vehicle window. Maryland's public guide says weight and use determine whether a trailer needs title, registration, or both, so classify it before the appointment.

Bring the title application, prior title or manufacturer certificate, bill of sale or other ownership proof, VIN or serial number, identification, and required taxes and fees. A non-camping trailer rated at 2,500 pounds or less is exempt from Maryland's title requirement, but the statutory exception does not include a camping trailer and does not answer every registration question.

Match the trailer to an authorized Maryland inspection station. A trailer over 3,000 and up to 10,000 pounds must have brakes on every wheel of at least one axle and automatic breakaway application; over 10,000 pounds requires brakes on all wheels and the same automatic breakaway protection.

Register a trailer that Maryland requires to be registered on its own record and plate. The MVA advises contacting it when weight or use leaves the title or registration result uncertain; do not infer the trailer's status from the tow vehicle's plate.
