Move a Trailer to Texas
Use the trailer's gross weight, construction, prior title, VIN, and empty-weight record to choose the Texas path.
Prepare the trailer before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Handle the trailer during the 30-day new-resident registration window. Do not assume registering the tow vehicle also registers the trailer.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
A non-farm trailer over 4,000 pounds gross weight must be titled. Titling at 4,000 pounds or less is optional unless the trailer was titled before, in which case it must remain titled.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
For an out-of-state travel trailer, physically compare the VIN and self-certify it on Form 130-U. An assembled trailer without a VIN requires an auto-theft-officer inspection before Texas assigns one.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Register every non-farm trailer used on public highways. Bring Form 130-U and the accepted ownership record; an out-of-state travel trailer also requires Form VTR-141, and a weight certificate is required when the ownership document omits empty weight.
Check the exact vehicle class
Manufactured, assembled, travel, park-model, and farm trailers do not share one rule. Missing paperwork for a manufactured trailer does not turn it into an assembled trailer.
