Cancel DC tags before ending DC insurance

After the destination registration is active, cancel the DC tag registration online or surrender the tags by mail or in person. Save the cancellation or surrender receipt, then cancel DC insurance; reversing the order creates an insurance-lapse fee.

Why the order matters

The wrong order can get expensive

DC DMV says canceling insurance first creates an insurance-lapse fee. Mailed tags can take 7–10 business days to process, and the agency advises waiting for the receipt before ending coverage.
