    Cancel DC tags before ending DC insurance

    After the destination registration is active, cancel the DC tag registration online or surrender the tags by mail or in person. Save the cancellation or surrender receipt, then cancel DC insurance; reversing the order creates an insurance-lapse fee.

    Confirm both records are clean

    Verify that the New Mexico registration and insurance are active, the District of Columbia registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
