High-consequence handoff

What could slow down this move

This New Mexico → Michigan handoff has both deadline pressure and a documented closeout consequence.

02

Avoidable old-state exposure

New Mexico warns that an unresolved insurance mismatch can suspend the registration. After a suspension notice, the owner must return the registration and plate within 10 days; reinstatement after insurance is reported costs $30.

03

Title-chain bottleneck

Bring the original title when available. If an out-of-state lienholder holds it, Michigan describes a foreign-ownership registration-only path using the current registration or other specified title evidence.

What to do, in order

  1. Before the move2–6 weeks before moving

Open the title chain before you need it

Bring the original title when available. If an out-of-state lienholder holds it, Michigan describes a foreign-ownership registration-only path using the current registration or other specified title evidence.

  2. Before the moveUntil replacement registration is active

Keep the old registration and insurance alive

Do not cancel the New Mexico policy just because the vehicle crossed a state line. Keep the registration-supported coverage intact until the Michigan registration is active and the New Mexico closeout rule is satisfied.

  3. Arriving in MichiganBefore the registration transaction

    Activate insurance Michigan will accept

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

  4. Arriving in MichiganAs soon as residency begins

    Transfer the driver's license

Pre-apply, schedule a Secretary of State office visit, and transfer the out-of-state license as soon as Michigan residency is established.

  5. Arriving in MichiganAs soon as residency begins

    Title and register the vehicle

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

  6. Close New MexicoAfter the new registration is active

Bridge the New Mexico insurance record while its registration remains active

If the New Mexico registration still remains active after the move, do not rely on an out-of-state policy appearing automatically in its insurance database. Submit signed Form MVD-11268 with proof of the out-of-state insurance and residency, and repeat it at each policy renewal for as long as the vehicle remains registered in New Mexico. Keep the affidavit packet and delivery proof with the destination registration.

  7. Final check7–14 days after closeout

    Confirm both records are clean

Verify that the Michigan registration and insurance are active, the New Mexico registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
