    Apply through the county Tax Collector within 30 days after moving while the prior registration remains valid. Mississippi publishes a $250 penalty in addition to standard late-registration penalties for missing the new-resident deadline.

    Do not cancel New York insurance before surrendering plates

    First activate the new registration, then surrender the New York plates and registration, obtain the FS-6T receipt, and only then end New York coverage. Reversing that order can create a registration and driver-license suspension.

    Confirm both records are clean

    Verify that the Mississippi registration and insurance are active, the New York registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
