Do not cancel New York insurance before surrendering plates

First activate the new registration, then surrender the New York plates and registration, obtain the FS-6T receipt, and only then end New York coverage. Reversing that order can create a registration and driver-license suspension.

Why the order matters

The wrong order can get expensive

New York's civil penalty reaches $900 for a 90-day insurance lapse. A lapse of 91 days or more can also suspend the driver license.
