    Title and register the vehicle

    Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.

    Do not cancel New York insurance before surrendering plates

    First activate the new registration, then surrender the New York plates and registration, obtain the FS-6T receipt, and only then end New York coverage. Reversing that order can create a registration and driver-license suspension.

    Confirm both records are clean

    Verify that the New Mexico registration and insurance are active, the New York registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
