What to do with Arkansas plates after moving to New Mexico
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Arkansas instruction only after the New Mexico registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.
Bring a current insurance card, policy copy, or insurer letter showing the required liability coverage.
Update the Arkansas registration mailing address
After the destination registration is active, use Arkansas DFA's Change Your Renewal Address service to update the mailing address on the vehicle registration. Save the confirmation with the new registration so later Arkansas notices do not disappear at the old address.
Open the official Arkansas instructionReviewed 2026-07-31- 1. Activate acceptable destination coverage
Confirm the effective date with the new insurer.
- 2. Register in New Mexico

- 3. Complete the Arkansas plate action
Keep the surrender, cancellation, mailing, destruction, or retention record the state provides.
- 4. End or rewrite the old policy
Ask the insurer to use dates that do not create an uncovered active registration.
