Report your move to Arlington County with the new-state registration, notify Virginia DMV within 30 days of an address change, and check how the county prorates the tax.

Keep each submission and final status separate

  1. 01Gather the proof for your kind of move

For a move out of Virginia, Arlington asks for a copy of the new-state vehicle registration, or a bill of lading or shipping document if the vehicle was shipped overseas. For a move within Virginia, it asks for your new address, the exact date of the move, and a vehicle personal property tax bill or filing from the new locality. It may also ask for proof of payment.

  2. 02Notify Virginia DMV

The county page says Virginia DMV must be notified within 30 days of any change of address and cites Code of Virginia 46.2-606(A). It also says to notify both DMV and the Commissioner of Revenue's Office, so the DMV notice does not replace the county report.

  3. 03Report the change to Arlington County

Use the county's CAPP portal at capp.arlingtonva.us. Without a CAPP account, the page offers an address-change form instead. You can also make an appointment by calling 703-228-3135 Option 0. The county says the documents you submit are reviewed for account adjustments or closures.

  4. 04Check the proration

Arlington prorates by the months the vehicle had taxable status in Arlington, and half a month or more counts as a full month. If the vehicle moved to a Virginia locality that does not prorate, you still owe Arlington the full year. Vehicles moved in the first half of the year, through June 30, are assessed by the Commissioner of Revenue under the county's Immediate Billing practice instead of waiting for the usual August billing. The page gives no review time and does not cover refunds or penalties. If a bill shows the wrong period, it says to email the Commissioner of Revenue's Office or call 703-228-3135 Option 0.

Proof target

Keep the record that shows the account changed

  • New-state registration, or bill of lading for an overseas shipment
  • For a move within Virginia: new address, move date, and the new locality's tax bill or filing
  • Record of your Virginia DMV address-change notice
  • CAPP, form, phone, or email submission record
  • Adjusted bill, account closure, or written account status
