Stop Fairfax County Vehicle Tax After Moving or Selling
Notify Fairfax County when a vehicle is sold or moved, preserve the effective date, and confirm the county's proration or other tax treatment in writing.
Keep each submission and final status separate
- 01Record the vehicle event
Keep the sale date and bill of sale, or the move date and new garaging or registration record. Use the event that actually removed the vehicle from Fairfax County.
- 02Notify Fairfax County
Use the county Vehicle Update Tool or the current email, phone, or in-person path. Report the vehicle, date, and whether it was sold or moved rather than only changing a mailing address.
- 03Confirm the tax treatment
Fairfax County generally prorates tax to the time the vehicle was normally garaged there, but it says a move to a non-prorating Virginia locality is not prorated. Ask how that rule applies to the recorded event.
- 04Keep the adjusted record
Save the submission receipt and the county's adjusted bill, refund, or written balance. Out-of-state plates do not prevent tax when the vehicle is still normally garaged in Fairfax County.
Keep the record that shows the account changed
- Sale record or new-location registration
- Fairfax County Vehicle Update Tool or contact receipt
- Recorded vehicle move or sale date
- Adjusted bill, refund, or written account status
Have us run the closeout record with you
We prepare the evidence map and questions, track the DMV and locality steps, and complete a final status check. You use the official account, sign, submit private records, and pay any balance directly.
