Switch car insurance from Kansas to New York
Activate coverage New York will accept before the registration transaction. Do not cancel the Kansaspolicy until the new registration is active and the old record is closed correctly.
- 01Keep the old record supported
Keep Kansas registration-supported coverage active while the vehicle is still recorded there.
- 02Activate New York coverage
A New York-registered vehicle must carry insurance issued by a company authorized in New York.
- 03Complete the destination registration
Register the vehicle within 30 days of establishing New York residency.
- 04Close Kansas
After the destination registration is active, take the Kansas plate and registration receipt to the county treasurer's motor-vehicle office in the county where the vehicle was registered. Moving out of state qualifies for a registration and property-tax refund; Kansas calculates it from the date the office receives the plate, so retain the office receipt and refund submission record.
- 05End or rewrite the old policy
Confirm effective dates with both insurers after the old registration is safely closed.
Check the policy for the new home
Home or renters coverage is a separate optional follow-up. It does not replace destination auto insurance.

Keep the course separate from the policy handoff. First confirm the New York policy and principal operator, then check the current DMV-approved providers.

NewState Drive keeps the state sequence, official requirements, and cancellation warning visible.
The licensed provider collects driver and vehicle details, explains coverage, returns quotes, and handles binding.
You choose the policy and confirm effective dates. A new policy cannot retroactively fix an earlier lapse.
