Credit Acceptance: move your financed car to another state

Start with the lender's current instructions. Then match them to the new state and build the request before the title moves.

Official lender instructions are linked below. State title rules are added after you choose your route.

Build the exact request

Where is the car moving?

We will combine Credit Acceptance's move path with the destination state's title rule. No VIN or account number is collected.

What the lender says

Start with Credit Acceptance's process

The destination state still decides what document it can use and where it must go.

  1. 01Start here

Contact the new state's motor vehicle department. Credit Acceptance says that if the department needs the original title, get a request form or letter on the department's letterhead that includes the office's address and phone number.

  2. 02Use the approved channel

Send the department's request to Credit Acceptance's Title Department by fax at 866-436-4890 or by mail to Credit Acceptance Corporation, Attn: Title Department, 25505 West 12 Mile Rd., Southfield, MI 48034. In Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, and New York the customer already receives the title from the state.

  3. 03Plan for the handoff

Credit Acceptance does not publish a turnaround for out-of-state title requests. Confirm the timing with the destination office and follow up on both the request date and document receipt.

NewState Drive is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Credit Acceptance. Confirm instructions inside yourlender account before sending sensitive information.

Loan already paid off?

Getting the Credit Acceptance lien release and title

After payoff the lender releases its lien instead of sending the title to a new state. See what Credit Acceptance publishes about timing, where the title goes, and its title department contacts.

Why both sides matter

A lender request is only useful if the new state can use it

Some states want an original title. Others accept a copy, lien letter, or registration-only path. Some require the local office to start the request. The builder checks the destination first.

Keep the lender request and receipt together

Add the two states to keep the request, lender send status, destination receipt, and final proof together.

Keep your place and return later

Track your progress, dates, title requests, and receipts to keep. We will email a private return link.

Transaction details

Use these fields when the vehicle was bought, sold, gifted, inherited, rejected, or delayed.

We use your email for the saved route. The two checkboxes are optional.

Credit Acceptance move questions

How do I contact Credit Acceptance about an out-of-state title transfer?
Send the department's request to Credit Acceptance's Title Department by fax at 866-436-4890 or by mail to Credit Acceptance Corporation, Attn: Title Department, 25505 West 12 Mile Rd., Southfield, MI 48034. In Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, and New York the customer already receives the title from the state.
Will Credit Acceptance register the car in the new state?
The destination motor vehicle agency controls registration. The lender or lessor handles the title or ownership document it holds. The two paths need to meet before the state can finish the transfer.
Can NewState Drive send the request for me?
Use the request notes and handoff checklist, then send the request through the lender's approved channel. You remain in control of every lender and agency submission.
Should I enter my VIN or account number here?
No. Add sensitive identifiers only inside the lender's own secure account, form, fax, mail, or other approved channel.
