  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    A boat with a valid out-of-state number can use Ohio waters for up to 60 days only while its principal use remains outside Ohio. An Ohio resident who declares Ohio as the principal place of use should complete the Ohio watercraft record rather than treating that exception as a resident grace period; the trailer follows the 30-day vehicle deadline.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Use the prior title or registration record and hull identification number for the watercraft. Ohio's title law exempts canoes and several boats under 14 feet based on their permanently affixed propulsion and horsepower, while other boats and qualifying outboard motors require the title path.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A pre-November 1972 boat, homemade boat, or personally imported boat can require an Ohio-assigned hull identification number. The highway trailer separately follows its title threshold, weight proof, plate, and brake rules.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register watercraft that are not exempt through the Ohio Division of Parks and Watercraft or an authorized agent. Ohio registration is issued on a three-year cycle, and a titled boat generally must present its title before registration.
