  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Register the trailer within 30 days after establishing Ohio residency. The tow vehicle's plate and insurance record do not register the trailer.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Ohio does not issue a title for a trailer weighing less than 4,000 pounds. A heavier trailer uses the out-of-state title conversion path; a lighter noncommercial trailer uses the weight and ownership evidence required for first registration.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Ohio generally requires driver-controlled brakes and automatic breakaway operation on a trailer with an empty weight of 2,000 pounds or more. A watercraft trailer manufactured on or after January 1, 2008 uses its separate 3,000-pound gross-weight or rating threshold and must have brakes on two wheels.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    A noncommercial trailer must have a maximum weight below 10,000 pounds and uses Form BMV 5712 plus accepted proof of weight. Ohio offers ordinary, multi-year, and nontransferable permanent registration paths, so choose the term only after confirming the class and weight.
