Move a Boat and Trailer to Oklahoma

Apply for Oklahoma title and registration within 30 calendar days after purchasing the boat or becoming an Oklahoma resident. The 60-day exception applies only to a visiting nonresident whose boat and motor are currently registered in another state. If either remains in Oklahoma more than 60 calendar days, Oklahoma registration is required and fees run from the date of entry. Oklahoma uses residency and time in the state, not a principal-use test.

Oklahoma generally titles and registers the vessel itself without a length threshold. Human-powered canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, and kiteboards are exempt, but powering a canoe, kayak, or paddleboat by motor or sail removes that exemption. A federally documented vessel remains registration-required but is title-exempt. Title and register an outboard motor over 10 horsepower separately; an inboard motor is not separately titled or registered.

On an ownership transfer, the seller must provide notarized confirmation that the HIN or motor serial number matches the ownership record. Service Oklahoma accepts the confirmation on a qualifying Oklahoma title, Form BM-10 completed by the seller, or licensed-operator verification on Form BM-26. A homemade vessel without a manufacturer-assigned HIN needs a separate law-enforcement inspection before Oklahoma assigns a number.

Start an original transaction at Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator with Form BM-26, the required HIN or motor-serial confirmation, and an accepted ownership record. Renewals can be completed online. Boat and motor registrations may run for one or three years, expire at the end of June, and the current registration must be carried aboard. For a dealer purchase awaiting documents, carry the dealer's bill of sale during the first 30 days and the official registration receipt afterward. Do not treat that document rule as a general temporary permit.
