  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Title and register a travel trailer within 30 days after establishing Oklahoma residency. A private noncommercial utility, boat, or farm trailer has no mandatory registration deadline because Oklahoma makes registration optional. Commercial use follows the commercial title and registration path.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Oklahoma titles travel trailers, including pop-up tent trailers, but does not issue a title for a private noncommercial utility, boat, or farm trailer. The latter may receive optional registration only, and Oklahoma recognizes a notarized bill of sale for ownership transfers. Do not use a weight threshold to choose between these paths; use the trailer's construction and actual use.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Plan for an out-of-state VIN inspection on a travel trailer. A private noncommercial trailer is not titled, so it does not go through an Oklahoma title VIN inspection. An assembled travel trailer uses Form 761-A with receipts, bills of sale, invoices, and manufacturer statements; approval of that form is not a roadworthiness certification.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Handle a travel trailer separately from its tow vehicle and bring Form 701-6 and the prior ownership record. The 60-day same-owner excise-tax exemption applies when the titled travel trailer was owned and registered in the former state for at least 60 days. Service Oklahoma does not publish a weight threshold for the private-trailer title and registration distinction, but commercial use changes the result. Bring purchase and prior-tax records if the travel trailer was acquired more recently.

Check the exact vehicle class

Brakes are required at 3,000 pounds GVWR or more, and below that threshold when the towed vehicle weighs more than 40 percent of the towing vehicle's GVWR. Required brakes must apply from the cab, engage automatically on breakaway, and remain applied for at least 15 minutes; surge brakes are expressly allowed for vessel trailers. Use a compliant coupling plus safety chains, cables, or an equivalent device, and maintain the required lights. Oklahoma generally limits a combination to two units. One narrow recreational exception allows a self-propelled RV rated at least three-quarter ton to tow a semitrailer plus one complete trailer or semitrailer if total length is no more than 65 feet; a bumper-pull trailer followed by another trailer does not match that exception.
